Nick Nason, solicitor and principal of Edgewater Legal, frequently advises internationally recognised researchers, academic scholars, and scientific specialists on the Global Talent immigration route. Outlined below is how a professional economic academic or researcher may qualify.

If you are recognised as an exceptionally talented scholar or researcher in economics, or one who demonstrates exceptional promise, you may qualify for a UK Global Talent visa.

You will generally need to be an active researcher in academia, a university department, a medical research institute, or a global health organisation, holding a PhD or equivalent research experience in economics, political science, business, sociology, or geography. If you are applying under Exceptional Talent, you will need to demonstrate a track record as a recognised leader in your field. If you are at an earlier stage in your career, you will instead need to demonstrate a developing professional track record and exceptional promise in one or more countries.2

The route is not limited to economic researchers or academics. Other types of academics and researchers who make a significant contribution to the creation, presentation, or commercial delivery of research or academia may also qualify, provided they can demonstrate recognition for their work.

Visa outline

The Global Talent visa allows you to live and work in the UK for up to five years, with the flexibility to choose the length of your visa. It also provides a pathway to settlement in the UK and, ultimately, British citizenship.

Before applying for the visa itself, you must first obtain an endorsement from Arts Council England. This involves completing an online application and submitting evidence demonstrating that you satisfy the relevant endorsement criteria.

Once endorsed, you can then submit your visa application.

Applicants endorsed under the Exceptional Talent route may be eligible to apply for settlement after only three years. Those endorsed under the Exceptional Promise route will usually qualify after five years.

The Main Criteria

You will need to provide three dated letters of recommendation.

Two of these letters should come from well-established organisations with whom you have worked that are recognised within the field of arts. At least one of these organisations should be based in the UK.

The third letter should be from another leading organisation within the field or from an individual with whom you have worked who has recognised expertise and standing within the art community.

Applicants seeking endorsement under the Exceptional Talent route must also demonstrate that they satisfy at least two of the following three criteria:

  • Two or more examples of significant research impact or peer-reviewed publication recognition for your work, either as an individual or principal contributor, published in high-impact economic journals.
  • Winning, or making a significant contribution to winning, at least one international academic award, medal, or prize for excellence in health or human sciences.
  • Evidence of significant professional contribution, such as international research grants, leading major economic cohorts, economic policy frameworks, or keynotes at prestigious international economic congresses.

If you are applying under the Exceptional Promise route, the evidential threshold is slightly lower. You must nevertheless demonstrate that you satisfy two of the following:

  • Two examples of recent scientific recognition or first-author publications demonstrating a developing research reputation.
  • Winning, being nominated for, or making a significant contribution to an international research fellowship, competitive grant, or early-career health science distinction.
  • Evidence of active research outputs, competitive project funding, field study leadership, or invited conference presentations demonstrating emerging leadership.

Regardless of which route you apply under, you must also submit an up-to-date CV outlining your professional career.

What is significant media recognition?

Media recognition should normally consist of peer-reviewed journal articles, citation metrics, or critical evaluation of your research published in reputable academic journals.

Suitable evidence may include journal impact factors, citation metrics, feature articles in major science media or formal adoption of your research into national or global policy guidelines.

For applicants under the Exceptional Talent route, personal blogs and social media content will generally not be accepted as evidence of significant media recognition.

Applicants applying under the Exceptional Promise route may rely on economic blogs or policy forums where they are authored by credible academic or research commentators and published on well-established platforms.

All media recognition should relate to work completed before publication and must have been published within five years of the date of application

Applicants should review the Arts Council England guidance carefully to understand what is considered sufficient evidence of significant media recognition.

What counts as an international award?

An international award should demonstrate significant recognition of your standing as an established or emerging leader in economics.

There is no prescribed list of qualifying awards. However, qualifying distinctions often include recognized awards received within the last five years.

Where you did not personally receive the award as a sole author, you may still rely upon it if you made a significant intellectual or research contribution to the winning multi-institutional team or co-authored research paper.

In those circumstances, you should provide supporting evidence from the lead author or principal investigator confirming the importance of your contribution to the awarded work.

What can be provided as proof of professional research or applied engagements?

Evidence may include peer-reviewed scientific papers, economic frameworks or research grant agreements,.

For economics, suitable evidence may also include invitations to deliver keynote lectures at major international symposiums, membership on journal editorial boards, grant review panels, or documented advisory roles for global economic agencies.

The evidence should clearly identify the date, location, your role, and your credited involvement in each research activity.
